When you are experiencing issues with your back, it can be harder to function in daily life as you struggle with back discomfort. Lifting things or even bending over or sitting in a chair can become a struggle. Read on to find some tips to help relieve your pain, if this is all too familiar to you.
Don’t ever ignore any back discomfort. Sometimes people will ignore the signals their body is sending to them. They attempt to ignore the pain in their backs. While in pain, moving too much may worsen it. Take it slow until the pain fades.
Repeated motion with the same muscle group or area of your body, regardless of the task or your position, should always be avoided in consideration of your aching back. Your daily routine can include a lot of repetitive motions or positions, so try and vary what you do or how you do it to keep from putting undue stress on your muscles and joints. If you’re sitting, get up and stretch your legs and if you’re standing, move around periodically.
To help prevent back discomfort, never slouch while you are doing anything on your feet. For example, many people mistakenly bend over the entire time they vacuum. Leaning over a vacuum cleaner, or hunching over a sink full of dishes, can exacerbate back discomfort. This pain is easily avoided if you maintain proper posture during this household activity. Make sure you stand completely erect, and power the movements of the vacuum with the strength of your legs. When you use your back, you create more back discomfort.
If your job requires long periods of sitting, get up and move around often. Regularly standing up and moving your body and legs stretches the muscles around your spine. This stretching can help to prevent future back pain caused by cumulative compression issues.
If you are experiencing back pain, stressing out about it will only make it worse. It’s important to relax so you don’t raise your chances of causing a muscle spasm. Take the time to rest and apply moist heat to the injured areas to alleviate the pain in your back.
Start small when treating your back pain. For example, resting your muscles for a day or two is sometimes all it takes to relieve your pain. If your back begs for quick relief, taking an anti-inflammatory pain medication, such as naproxen sodium or ibuprofen, helps a little. Alternate between cold packs and heat packs to help soothe a back that aches. Sometimes the age-old methods are the best ones to try.
If you’re over 10 pounds overweight, you should get yourself on a diet in order to eliminate these excess pounds. More weight will augment your body’s center of gravity, particularly if that weight is around your middle. These pounds strain your low back, and if they are allowed to remain long term will cause chronic pain in that area.
Back surgery can sometimes be used to fix paralysis and restore motion. There are other rare back conditions that may arise in which back surgery is the only option, as well. Often, these problems are caused by unknown situations or by degenerative diseases.
Lay completely limp, as a relaxation technique. After you do this, you should isolate certain muscles and other body parts. Only flex one muscle at a time at a very slow pace. This will help reduce the pain and relax you muscles.
Have another cup of coffee – it may help your back! Recent studies have shown caffeine that is in coffee has helped to block the chemical called adenosine. This substance can make the back muscles stiffen up, so drinking coffee can help relax these muscles and reduce pain.
How do you sleep? Sleeping on your side can be helpful or you can sleep in your back with a heating pad. Make sure that you do not sleep on your stomach.
Stretching while muscles are warm is the greatest time for stretching muscles to avoid back discomfort. Be sure to do some stretching while you are cooling down after your exercises.
If you have back discomfort, one of the most helpful things to do is find help. It’s not shameful to have someone helping you lift objects and cleaning around your home. There is no point in hurting yourself by more by trying to do too much.
An exceptional way to reduce back discomfort, if it is in your budget, is physical therapy. If your local hospital does not have a therapist on staff, staff members can at least provide recommendations. While physical therapy tends to be expensive, it is worth it in the long run.
